Academic qualifications and work profile: Born 18thJanuary 1958, Kyamanywa obtained a B. Sc. Agriculture (Honours: Second class Upper division) Makerere University in 1980, and Ph.D (Agricultural Entomology) degree of Makerere University in1987 under the African Regional Post graduate Programme in Insect Science (ARPPIS) at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) – Nairobi Kenya.
He started serving as Teaching Assistant in the then Faculty Agriculture and Forestry in 1986. He was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Crop Science in 1988. In 1990, he joined the International Centre of Insect Physiology Ecology in Kenya as a PESTNET Resident Scientist. In 1993, he returned to the Department of Crop Science as Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1996, Associate Professor in 2001 and Professor in 2006. He was Head of Department of Crop Science (September 1998 to-2006), a Deputy Vice Chancellor AA of Kyambogo University (2007-2008) and Dean of Faculty of Agriculture (2009 – 2010). Currently he is acting Principal of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Science, Makerere University. He is Chairman of the Change Management Committee of the Makerere University.
He is a Professor of Pest Management and has 26 years expertise in Agricultural Entomology and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). He has successfully supervised over 50 M.Sc. and 5 Ph.D students in the fields of IPM, Biological control, storage pest management and use of molecular techniques for managing pests of the above crops. He has been PI of 13 research projects. Currently, he is a coordinator for two regional research programs; i) Enhancing Food Security through Improved Seed Systems and Varieties of Cassava, Potato and Sweet potato Resilient to Climate Change in Eastern Africa under the BIOINNOVATE Programme, ii) The East Africa Regional Integrated Pest Management Project under the Integrated Pest management Collaborative Research Support Programme (IPM CRSP). These Programmes involve scientists from the three East African countries. He is also PI of two national research projects (i) Enhancing University Responsiveness To Agribusiness Development, the project is funded by DANIDA through UNBrain program of FARA; (ii) Strengthening East African Resilience and climate Change Adaptation Capacity through training, Research and Policy interventions; the project is funded by Rockefeller.
He has published over 50 papers in international refereed journals, and 69 conference proceedings. Contributed a chapter in a book entitled “Globalizing Integrated Pest Management” by Blackwell. He has travelled widely and has tremendous experience in International Pest management issues.
He has served in several leadership positions both at community and University levels; In Secondary School, he was Chairman of the Scout Council from 1973 – 1974. In “A” Levels, he was Treasurer for the Science Club and was Minister of Finance in the Students Guild at Makerere University. He is the founding RC 1 Chairman for the University Farm Kabanyolo RC1. He was Chairperson of EAFRINET: A taxonomic Network of BIONET International, for Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zanzibar, Ethiopia and Eritrea (Since 1997 to 2006). Currently he is Chairman of the Agricultural Chemicals Control Technical Committee of the Uganda Agricultural Chemicals Board of the MAAIF. He is a member of the IPM/CRSP Technical Committee representing Africa sites since May 1998
He has tremendous capacity for resource mobilization; currently he is managing, as PI, five projects worth about US Dollar three million (US$3,000,000).
Am currently co-ordinating an East African regional IPM project under the IPM/CRSP program sponsored by USAID through Virginia Tech University. I developed this project form $3000/annum in 1994 to $250,000 and it is currently contributing about $150,000/year to Research in the School of Agricultural Sciences. Six members of staff are active in this project and over 30 MSc Students have benefited from it.
Due to good out puts of EA IPM CRSP site, I am a member of the IPM/CRSP Technical Committee representing Africa sites since May 1998.
