The Consortium for Enhancing University Responsiveness to Agribusiness Development (CURAD) is an innovative, autonomous agribusiness incubator established in 2012 by Makerere University, NUCAFE, and NARO, with support from DANIDA under the FARA-UniBRAIN Programme.

As a public–private partnership initiative, CURAD supports farmers, farmer organizations, agro-entrepreneurs, students, graduates, start-ups, and SMEs to transform ideas into competitive agribusiness enterprises. We are driven by a vision to produce innovative young entrepreneurs and agribusiness leaders who champion productivity, profitability, and job creation in the agricultural sector.

  • CULTIVATING THE FUTURE OF AGRIBUSINESS IN BUSOGA SUB REGION

“Agribusiness is not just a business, it’s a tool to transform communities, empower youth, and create lasting impact.” – Nangobi Victoria Kisakye

In a world where agribusiness holds immense potential to transform lives but still faces barriers to youth participation and sustainable growth, Nangobi Victoria Kisakye from Jinja, Eastern Uganda, stands out as a beacon of innovation, resilience, and social entrepreneurship.

The Busoga region, historically known for its fertile soils, abundant lakes, and vibrant culture, is among Uganda’s poorest regions, with many communities facing high levels of poverty, limited access to finance, and underdeveloped agribusiness value chains. Traditionally celebrated for coffee, cotton, and fishing, Busoga has struggled to translate its natural resources into widespread economic prosperity. Amid these challenges, young entrepreneurs like Victoria are redefining the region’s agribusiness landscape, turning traditional farming into sustainable enterprises that uplift communities.

Victoria, 29, a mother of two, is a visionary agronomist and social entrepreneur who co-founded Busoga Flower Food Company Limited in August 2025. What began as a micro coffee roastery in Jinja City has quickly evolved into a multi-commodity food processing enterprise producing Specialty Robusta Coffee, Certified Organic Vanilla, Fine Chocolate, Cashew, Groundnuts, and superfoods like Avocado Seed Powder. Her story is one of determination, innovation, and a commitment to uplifting her community.

Engagement with the SAYE Project

Victoria first learned about the Stimulating Agribusiness for Youth Employment (SAYE) Project in June 2025 through a friend of her husband. SAYE aims to improve the social and economic wellbeing of 250,000 young people by 2029 in the Busoga sub-region. At the time, Victoria was actively involved in coffee production but lacked technical expertise and business management skills. Motivated to grow her enterprise and improve operational efficiency, she immediately joined SAYE under CURAD’s Incubation Pathway to gain mentorship, technical skills in coffee production, and access to markets.

Through CURAD’s mentorship and training, Victoria gained hands-on expertise in coffee value chain management, including:

  • Coffee cultivation best practices for Robusta coffee
  • Post-harvest handling, drying, and quality control
  • Roasting techniques and flavor profiling for specialty coffee
  • Packaging, branding, and market positioning for coffee products

Additionally, she acquired skills in financial literacy, equipping her to manage her business finances effectively, as well as business development, product packaging, and branding strategies.

“Joining SAYE was the spark that turned my passion for coffee into a thriving business, mentorship, skills, and market access opened doors I never imagined.” Says Nangobi Victoria Kisakye

With SAYE’s support under CURAD, her flagship product, Busoga Flower Coffee, successfully passed a quality audit with UNBS, establishing strong market recognition. Nangbi also benefits from access to high-end machinery at CURAD’s Coffee Entrepreneurship Bureau of Uganda (CEBU), enabling her to produce premium-quality coffee and meet industry standards.

Through CURAD-SAYE facilitated market linkages, including participation in expos, trade shows, and networking events, Victoria has significantly increased the visibility of her company, created new sales opportunities, and strengthened partnerships that are accelerating business growth. Today, Victoria and her co-founder partner jointly drive the company’s operations, blending technical knowledge with strategic business vision.

Driving Sustainable Growth and Community Impact

“When we pay farmers fairly and train youth, we plant the seeds of community transformation.” – Victoria Kisakye

Under Victoria’s leadership, Busoga Flower Food Company Limited champions fair trade and sustainability, paying smallholder farmers 20% above market prices to incentivize quality production while providing employment and skills training for rural youth, including five young people she directly employs across production, marketing, and transportation, empowering them with practical skills and income opportunities.

Looking ahead

Guided by a regenerative vision, the company is advancing toward becoming a solar-powered, zero-waste, carbon-negative food processor, converting all processing waste into biofertilizers and biochar to enhance soil health and farmer productivity.

Through her work, Victoria is transforming Busoga’s agribusiness landscape, demonstrating that even in one of Uganda’s poorest regions, entrepreneurship, innovation, and ethical practices can drive social and economic change. Her leadership continues to inspire a new generation of youth to see agribusiness not just as a livelihood, but as a platform for transformation.
